Meet the four actresses in the running to play the lead in Alita: Battle Angel

James Cameron and Robert Rodriguez are closing in on the female lead for Alita: Battle Angel.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, four actresses have tested for the title role in the cyberpunk sci-fi film even though the movie hasn’t been greenlit yet because of budgetary issues. Those are still being worked out as 20th Century Fox is trying to bring it down from the $175 million-$200 million range.

So, who are the actresses in the running? They are: Maika Monroe (It Follows, Independence Day: Resurgence), Rosa Salazar (Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials), Disney Channel star Zendaya (K.C. Undercover, Spider-Man: Homecoming) and Bella Thorne (Shake It Up, Amityville: The Awakening).

With a screenplay penned by Laeta Kalogridis (Shutter Island) and James Cameron, the movie will be helmed by Robert Rodriguez and produced by Cameron and his Lightstorm Entertainment partner Jon Landau. Alita: Battle Angel is the live-action adaptation of Yukito Kishiro’s popular Japanese cyberpunk manga series Battle Angel Alita.

Taking place in the 26th century, the story revolves around a female cyborg named Alita who’s discovered by a scientist in a scrapyard. Having no memory of her past except for her lethal martial arts skills, she becomes a bounty hunter, tracking down criminals. The upcoming action-adventure movie will serve as a backdrop to a young woman’s journey of self-discovery and her search for love. Awww.

Sources have told THR that Cameron and Rodriguez are looking to make the role a star-making vehicle for the actress who’ll get cast, just as Cameron did for Jessica Alba with his Dark Angel TV series (2000-2002). According to said sources, Zendaya might be the frontrunner for the role, but scheduling conflicts with her hit TV show could present a problem for her nabbing the role.

Which of these four actresses do you think has what it takes to play the lead in Alita: Battle Angel? Is there anyone else you'd rather see in the role?
