Robert Downey Jr. confirms Sherlock Holmes 3 to start filming this year

The last time we saw Robert Downey Jr. play the role of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective was in Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows back in 2011. Since then, the busy actor has starred in The Avengers, Iron Man 3, Avengers: Age of Ultron and Captain America: Civil War, just to name a few.

Rumors of a third Sherlock Holmes have been making the rounds for a while now, but it looks like we may finally be getting one step closer to the movie becoming a reality. The reason the movie has been delayed for so long when there was only a two-year gap between Sherlock Holmes (2009) and its sequel, A Game of Shadows? His and director Guy Ritchie’s busy schedules. No kidding!

While making the press rounds for Captain America’s third movie, the actor sat down with ShortList for an interview, where he revealed that he and Ritchie (who is currently hard at work on Knights of the Roundtable: King Arthur with Charlie Hunnam in the title role) would start working on the third Sherlock Holmes film before the end of the year. At least, that's the plan.

“We’re talking about it right now. We can do some preliminary stuff. If we could shoot it on Skype, we could have the whole [movie] done in a week. When we’re making those Sherlock movies it is off the hook. [So] we’ll attempt to make one this year. It really is a big deal to go and do those movies. I’m tired all the time, but I’m so excited about it.”

Iron Man 3 writer Drew Pearce is currently penning the screenplay that will see Downey and Jude Law reunite as Sherlock Holmes and his BFF, Dr. John Watson. Even though the character met her demise in the second movie, Doctor Strange actress Rachel McAdams is rumored to return as Holmes’ true love, Irene Adler. But as I said, that last bit is just a rumor, so, grain of salt.

Whether or not Downey actually starts filming Sherlock Holmes 3 by the end of 2016 remains to be seen, of course, but in the meanwhile, the actor is showing no signs of slowing down. Not only will he star in Avengers: Infinity War - Part I (May 4, 2018) and Part II (May 3, 2019), but it’s just been officially confirmed he will reprise his role of Tony Stark in Marvel and Sony’s Spider-Man: Homecoming, set to open July 7, 2017.

Are you excited to hear that a third Sherlock Holmes movie is finally coming?
