The classic kid-action franchise Power Rangers is getting a hard reboot for the big screen, and now we have our first look at how the series’ most iconic baddie has been reimagined.
People has debuted the first pic of Elizabeth Banks as the big bad Rita Repulsa, which is a far cry from the version fans of a certain age likely remember. But, considering how positively silly the original version was, they had to change it somehow. Banks’ version looks like a spiky (creepy) twist on Poison Ivy, and is certainly more menacing than the cartoonish original. Though, it's worth noting, Joseph Kahn’s unofficial version did a surprisingly good job of making the original look scary.
Banks teased that this version of the character is a “modern and edgy re-imagining of the original Rita Repulsa” who will be “unpredictable as a character." The actress also revealed that this version of the character will have a “backstory that connects her to the new Rangers.” Which, yeah, you almost have to make some canonical changes to make the original’s silly premise stretch enough to a semi-realistic feature film.
Along with Banks, the new Power Rangers also stars Dacre Montgomery as the Red Ranger, RJ Cyler as the Blue Ranger, Naomi Scott as the Pink Ranger, Becky G as the Yellow Ranger and Ludi Lin as the Black Ranger.
The new-look Power Rangers is set to open in May of 2017.
What do you think of Banks’ Rita? Is this going to be a guilty pleasure romp, or a trainwreck?
