Rumor of the Day: New Star Trek show set between TOS and TNG, and might be an anthology

Bryan Fuller cut his teeth writing TV by working on both Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek:Voyager. And we, as fans, hope and trust that he's going to use his knowledge as a Trek fan and as someone who's learned a lot about how to write TV (sci-fi or otherwise) over the years to make this new Star Trek series into something compelling.

And we've probably all had our conversations over who should be cast and, more to the point, when in the continuity this series should be set.

Now consider this info to be firmly planted in Rumorville, USA, but word on the street (and by "street," I mean "Birth. Movies. Death.") is that the new Star Trek series will be set after the events of Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country but before the beginning of Star Trek: The Next Generation. So that gives us a window starting from the year of our lord 2293 and ending around 2364. And much like Star Trek VI, that is a largely undiscovered country. Beyond the maiden voyage of the Enterprise B and the disappearance of one James T. Kirk, there ain't a lot to know officially.

But we're not done just yet. In addition to the time period the next piece of information, which makes a lot of sense, is that our characters will NOT be cruising around in a little ship called Enterprise. And that's good. Some of the best Star Trek isn't set on the flagship for the United Federation of Planets, right?

But we're still not done. Let it be known that this is even further deep into the rumor woods, but it's looking like, despite the peace brokered at the Khitomer Conference, Fuller still wants there to be some "evil" Klingons out there. And, hey, if you're from the good ol' U-S-of-A you know there's plenty of folks in the South who still want to secede from the Union. What I'm saying is this -- Klingons who aren't ready to cozy up to the Federation post-peace ain't exactly a hard sell as a concept.

But we're STILL not done, and this is my favorite rumor of them all -- the new Star Trek series will be an anthology show. Translation? We won't stick with one ship or one time period each season. So we could jump from the 23rd century to... anywhere. You want a Section 31 series? It could happen. You want something set ont he time ship Relativity? It's not out of the realm of possibility. There's a host of nooks and crannies to explore and, if Fuller has his way, rumor has it that's just what he'll do.

Yes, these are rumors. But, MAN! These are all the things this Star Trek dweeb has dreamed of hearing. So let's allow ourselves a moment to accept this as a real possibility -- what are you hoping to see from the late 23rd century? And what other time periods do you want to see explored?
