Midnight Special is heating up to be a trippy genre gem later this month, delivering a decidedly old-school approach to the sci-fi material with director Jeff Nichols at the helm. Seeing these three new TV promos, I'm reminded of John Carpenter's Starman and Mark Lester's Firestarter, both '80s classics, as a shadowy governmental agency hunts down a frightened boy possessing extreme paranormal powers. Nichols, who directed the disturbing apocalyptic thriller Take Shelter, is a master of this eerie blend of imagery-based supernatural drama, and the cast he's assembled should serve up an unsettling sci-fi offering. Starring Michael Shannon, Joel Edgerton, Kirsten Dunst, Adam Driver, Jaeden Lieberher, Bill Camp, Scott Haze, Paul Sparks and Sam Shepard, Midnight Special hits theaters on March 18.
Here's the official synopsis:
Roy (Michael Shannon) is a father desperate to protect his uniquely gifted, eight-year-old son in this genre-defying thriller which proves once again that director Jeff Nichols is one of the most compelling storytellers of our time. As father and son go on the run, an intense chase ensues as they are hunted down by a mysterious cult and a clandestine government agency – the outcome of which could bring about a world-changing event.
