The Joker and the Riddler were almost the villains in Batman v Superman

It doesn’t open until this weekend, but we already know Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is cram-packed with half of DC’s superhero (and villain) roster. Turns out, it could’ve featured a few more.

In an interview promoting the (hopefully) epic clash of the titans, Zack Snyder opened up to Collider about how the script came together — and how it evolved along the way. Turns out, before they nailed down the decision to feature Lex Luthor, Snyder had considered including a few of Batman’s A-list baddies: the Joker and the Riddler.

Here’s an excerpt from his comments:

“We talked about the possibility of putting them in. [Screenwriter] Chris Terrio and I talked about it a lot and felt that their mythological presence is felt in the movie, and that’s cool, but I didn’t want to get my eye too far off the ball because I needed to spend the time, frankly, with Batman and Superman to understand the conflict.”

Considering just how different the story would’ve had to be to accommodate these characters, you have to wonder if this concept came (and went) fairly early in development. It’s also interesting that they were looking at digging deeper into the Batman canon with this film — as opposed to classic Supes villain Lex Luthor. Plus, Suicide Squad shows they were keen to introduce a new Joker, so that option’s not much of a surprise.

Looking to the future, you’d have to think a new Riddler could be on the short list for a Batman solo film — possibly getting his team-up with Jared Leto’s new Joker.

What do you think? How would the Riddler fit into this world? Do you wish Leto’s Joker had a bigger role in Batman v Superman?
