Sebastian Stan reveals what's in Bucky's backpack in Captain America: Civil War

Ever since the Captain America: Civil War trailers exploded online, fans have been speculating over every single detail and scene shown, providing detailed analysis frame by frame, shot by shot.

One of the things fans have been speculating over is Bucky Barnes’ backpack, which the former Winter Soldier is seen carrying on his back in several shots and scenes. So, what’s in there? Inquiring minds want to know. (Okay, I want to know.)

Actor Sebastian Stan was kind enough to provide the answer when he responded to a fan question by Instagram user @coleisadreamer, and this may be one of the most heartbreaking things I’ve heard in a while. Cue a million fanfics!

“Dea[r] Cole, in his backpack there are a dozen notebooks that compose the scattered memories dating back to as far as he can remember which somewhat piece together a scattered life. In a similar way to Alzheimer's, he's written things down, for fear of losing his memory again. He was prepared, were something to happen, to walk away with nothing but that backpack, which is why it's the only thing he takes and knowing full well that not everything those pages contain is pretty.”

There you have it. Excuse me while I go sob into a corner. From what we’ve seen in the trailers so far, Bucky has seemingly regained part of his memory. At the very least, he remembers his BFF Steve: “Your mom’s name is Sarah. You used to wear newspapers in your shoes.”

Now the questions are: Will he be turned back into the Winter Soldier again with his already fragmented memory wiped clean? We’ve all seen Bucky hooked up in that machine thingy, right? Can’t be good. And we saw him attack Steve in that behind-the-scenes footage. If this happens, will it be Baron Zemo’s (Daniel Bruhl) doing? Will those precious notebooks help Bucky remember who he was/is again?

Captain America: Civil War opens in movie theaters on May 6.
