Deadpool screenwriters sound off on the possibilities of an X-Men crossover

With Deadpool not only taking the box office by storm, but also taking place in the same movie universe as the X-Men, fans are no doubt eager to learn about the possibilities of seeing star Ryan Reynold’s Merc With a Mouth take up Colossus’ offer to join Professor X’s team in a future X-Men film.

In a new interview with Indie Wire, Deadpool scribes Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (who are currently hard at work on the script for Deadpool 2) opened up about the possibilities of an X-Men movie that would include Wade Wilson as part of the team, and the screenwriters hinted that even though there'll probably still be minor connections with the superhero team, we shouldn’t expect a full-blown crossover between the foul-mouthed fourth-wall-breaking antihero and our beloved mutants just yet.

“If you look at the ‘Iron Man’ model they had two 'Iron Man' [movies] before they had an ‘Avengers,’ and if left up to us, I think that would be a very prudent path,” Reese explained. “The second issue at hand is the 'X-Men' universe timeline. 'The X-Men' series is currently set in the 1980s, 'Deadpool,' is set three decades later in our present day.”

With Wernick elaborating that there is currently a timeline issue at hand:

“It’s a timeline that will eventually catch up I would imagine,” Wernick said. “But ['X-Men' producer] Simon [Kingberg’s] more the keeper of that universe and maybe we’ll see more X-Men playing in Deadpool’s sandbox and probably Deadpool playing in their sandbox at some point.”

Wernick also warned that both 20th Century Fox superhero movie franchises shouldn’t be merged too soon, saying:

“Deadpool’s now become a brand and franchise unto himself, independent of the ‘X-Men' and that’s great,” Wernick continued. “And that gives the studio two franchises in one, but I think it is its own franchise, and you’ll see synergy between those two properties, but they’re two very distinct brands.”

There you have it. What do you think of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick’s comments about the current crossover possibilities (or lack thereof) between Deadpool and X-Men?
