Rumor of the Day: Fan favorite Ghostbusters character to return in reboot

When filming was ramping up on Paul Feig’s Ghostbusters last year, a rumor started making the rounds that claimed a fan-favorite character would be coming back. Then it was (effectively) shot down. But was it true all along?

Potential minor spoilers ahead for 2016's Ghostbusters!

To recap: Reports broke last fall claiming veteran voice actor Dan Castellaneta (The Simpsons) would be providing voice work for Slimer, the fan-favorite ghost/mascot from the original Ghostbusters films. But Feig shot it down back in November — though, to be clear, he technically only refuted the report that Castellaneta would be bringing the character to life. But most fans took it to mean that Slimer wouldn’t be in the film.

Enter co-star Michael K. Williams, who will play an FBI agent looking into all the ghostly shenanigans. Williams was talking up his role to Entertainment Weekly and was positively geeked about the fact that he shot some scenes with Slimer. Yeah, that Slimer.

Here’s the choice excerpt:

“I play the FBI agent who works for the mayor. Our whole thing is, we’re going to tell the people it was a flash in the sky and ‘Run along little women with your ghosts, we got this.’ I’m not going to lie, working with Melissa, and Kristen, and Kate, was really dope. But I got to work with Slimer, dude. Like Slimer! I’m in a scene with Slimer! I’m a huge Ghostbusters fan and it was a dream come true.”

So, yeah. It would seem Feig was playing coy when he axed that report, which makes sense, since they don’t want every little wrinkle made public. But Slimer is one of the most recognizable characters from the original films and provides some nice comic relief, so it stands to reason Feig would use him in some capacity.

Are you glad to hear Slimer is, apparently, making a triumphant return?

Ghostbusters opens July 15.
