Star Wars: The Force Awakens leads Saturn Awards nominations

The 42nd annual genre awards were just as pleased to return to a galaxy far, far away as everyone else.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens dominates this year's Saturn nominations with a record 15 nods, including Best Science Fiction Film, Best Actor (Harrison Ford), Best Actress (Daisy Ridley), Best Supporting Actor(s) (John Boyega & Adam Driver), Best Supporting Actress(es) (Carrie Fisher & Lupita Nyong’o), Best Director (J.J. Abrams) and more.

The next closest contenders on the film side are Crimson Peak and Mad Max: Fury Road, which racked up nine nominations each, while on the TV end of things, The Walking Dead garnered seven nominations, leading that field. Other films with numerous nominations include Jurassic World, Ant-Man and The Martian, while Game of Thrones, Daredevil and Supergirl are among the other major TV contenders.

Keeping up with the times, this year the Saturn Awards has added a category for Best New Media Television, honoring series like Daredevil and The Man in the High Castle, which premiered on non-traditional streaming services Netflix and Amazon, respectively.

As usual, the Saturns are so expansive and inclusive that we have to wonder at some of the nominees -- like financial drama 99 Homes -- but you can peruse a partial list of the nominations below or the full list at the official Saturns website.

The 44-year-old Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy & Horror Films will present this year’s Saturn Awards in June in Burbank, Calif.
