Gotham's proto-Joker terrifies in first trailer for long-delayed Amityville: The Awakening

A reboot of the Amityville horror franchise was shot back in 2014, and now the film is finally about to see the light of day. So, how does it look?

Originally dubbed Amityville: The Lost Tapes, the film went through some work after being bumped off the 2015 release schedule. Newly retitled Amityville: The Awakening, the film stars a smattering of young stars in a modern-day story set at the classic murder house. The cast includes Gotham alum Cameron Monaghan (he played proto-Joker Jermoe), former Disney star Bella Thorne and Jennifer Jason Leigh (The Hateful Eight).

The plot follows a family that moves into a new home (guess which one?), and when some freaky things start happening, they realize they’ve moved into the infamous Amityville house. Behind the camera, the film was produced by low-budget horror maven Jason Blum (The Purge, Insidious) and directed by Franck Khalfoun (Maniac, P2).

The footage itself isn’t really anything to write home about and looks like your typical by-the-numbers modern horror flick. Which isn’t much of a surprise, considering it was shelved for so long, but it’s also a major letdown. Who knows? Maybe it’ll turn out to be a surprise. But it doesn’t look promising. On the bright side: Monaghan looks positively terrifying, and the film is Rated R, so maybe they’ll go all-out with it.

Amityville: The Awakening will finally open April 1.
