James Gunn says: No Thanos, No Infinity Stones for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2

As we eagerly await to hear any casting news, plot info, and new character details for Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2, director James Gunn revealed some intriguing tidbits about the upcoming superhero movie.

The third entry in Marvel’s Phase 3 (which is kicking off with Captain America: Civil War on May 6, followed by Doctor Strange on Nov. 4 before we get the GotG sequel on May 5, 2017), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 will not only see the return of the biggest idiots in the galaxy (Peter Quill/Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket Raccon, Groot), but also feature lots of familiar faces (Nebula! Yondu!) along with fresh new ones including Peter Quill's dad and even perhaps the long-rumored Mantis.

With filming now kicking off in Atlanta, Gunn took to Facebook to answer a few fan questions. Even though the director previously said that Thanos (Josh Brolin) was “not really a part of Vol. 2” it now seems the Mad Titan won’t even have an itsy bitsy cameo in the movie. Here’s what he said:

“Thanos will not appear in Vol. 2. No. As I've said before, Thanos isn't in this movie. I think he's gonna have a little bit to do and say when it comes to a certain wars and infinity. We've got other fish to fry in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.”

The "other fish to fry," as Gunn puts it, could very well be rumored villain Ego, The Living Planet.

Gunn also revealed some disappointing news concerning the Infinity Gauntlet. Fans who were hoping to see the movie explore the Infinity Stones again (since Thanos has yet to snatch them all before Avengers: Infinity War – Part I opens on May 4, 2018), will be sorely disappointed because it looks like the movie won’t deal with the stones.

“We're not really so much about the Infinity Stones in Guardians 2. Is that a spoiler? It's not really a thing.”

Well, that's a huge bummer. This (as MCU Exchange points out) just pretty much dashed any hopes we had to see Adam Warlock — who's the proud owner of the Soul Gem in the Marvel comics that's still unaccounted for in the MCU — make an appearance on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2.

Are you disappointed to hear there will be no Thanos or Infinity Stones featured in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2?
