TV THIS WEEK: Sleepy Hollow returns, Lost Girl's final episodes, and more!

We're now one full month into the year, and we're still looking at more midseason returns, including one show that's already ended its run in another country. Over the next few days we get the return of Lost Girl and Sleepy Hollow, as well as The Expanse's season finale, the third episode of The X-Files revival and more.

Check out the week in TV below. What's on your watchlist?

The X-Files (FOX) Monday, 8 p.m. - "Mulder & Scully Meet the Were-Monster"

Everyone knows how excited we all seemed to see the long-awaited return of The X-Files, but how many people actually put their money where their mouths were? Well, in an age full of cord cutting and DVR watching, this revival proved itself to be a live hit. More than 16 million people turned out to watch the premiere, which was bolstered by the NFC Championship Game, but that's not all. The Monday episode, which had no blockbuster lead-in at all, brought in almost 10 million viewers, and if that weren't enough, the premiere pulled in 20 million viewers in Live+3 and a whopping 7.8 demo score. In the particular age of television that we live in, that's huge. The X-Files is back, and it's back in a big way. Now we just have to see if the show can sustain its initial momentum. Check out a preview for Episode 3 below.

Lost Girl (Syfy) Monday, 10 p.m. - "44 Minutes to Save the World"

Midseason premiere! - Technically, Lost Girl already ended ... in Canada. But now U.S. viewers get a chance to say goodbye with the beginning of the end. For five seasons, this show has been dark, funny, sexy and sort of essential to Syfy's lineup, but now it's time to move on. So, as we continue to watch Syfy's transition into a wave of new programming that includes things like The Expanse and The Magicians, we also get to watch this show say goodbye. The first of the final eight episodes arrives this week.

The Muppets (ABC) Tuesday, 8:30 p.m. - "Swine Song"

Midseason premiere! - The Muppets is returning this week after a showrunner shuffle, and a revamp of its concept that will see a friendlier face put on its metafictional show-within-a-show concept. The early episodes of the series put a new spin on the backstage drama of the original Muppet Show, presenting it as a behind-the-scenes look at the stresses of putting on a talk show and the character drama that goes with that. Now we're apparently getting a fresh look, and it'll begin with a branding expert arriving to revamp the show, adding even more meta spins to this series. Will it work? We'll have to watch and find out.

The Expanse (Syfy) Tuesday, 10 p.m. - "Critical Mass" and "Leviathan Wakes"

Season finale! - The Expanse was one of the shows billed as part of Syfy's return of the hard sci-fi that defined its Battlestar Galactica heyday, and in terms of working with the genre, it's certainly delivered. As far as ratings go, it rarely produces more than 1 million live viewers per episode, but post-live viewing through various platforms pushed it to a level of success that meant we'll get a second season, so we don't have to go into this week's finale worrying about its continuation. All we have to do is relax, enjoy the show and wait for its 2017 return.

Sleepy Hollow (FOX) Friday, 8 p.m. - "One Life"

Midseason premiere! - We've already talked about Sleepy Hollow's attempt to revamp as a show that's more watchable in pieces, rather than a show dependent upon a complex week-to-week mythology, in order to improve ratings. Well ... it hasn't exactly worked. The show's retaining a big chunk of its audience, but in the long run switching to a more episodic mode has neither drawn new viewers nor coaxed many old ones to come back, so we've arrived here, with the show airing on Fridays. More and more as the TV landscape changes, we're seeing shows survive and even thrive on the night so often reserved for airing departing shows (Fox's genre drama Second Chance, which has seen little early ratings luck, also debuts there this week), but there's a chance Sleepy Hollow could actually score a better audience there with little competition. Brace yourself if you're a fan, though, because this could quite possibly mean the end of this series.
