Going to work turns deadly in red-band trailer for James Gunn's The Belko Experiment

The first exciting trailer for Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn’s new horror thriller The Belko Experiment has finally been released.

The movie, written by Gunn and directed by Greg McLean (Wolf Creek), stars John Gallagher Jr. (Short Term 12), Adria Arjona (True Detective, Emerald City), John C. McGinley (Stan Against Evil), Tony Goldwyn (Scandal), David Dastmalchian (The Dark Knight), Melonie Diaz (Fruitvale Station), Michael Rooker (Guardians of the Galaxy) and Sean Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy).

Even though The Belko Experiment debuted at the Toronto International Film Festival back in September, we had yet to see a trailer for the horror movie slated to be released next spring. Unveiled by James Gunn late last night, this red-band trailer will have you sitting on the edge of your seat and biting your nails. Think about the whole thing as Office Space meets Battle Royale in that the trapped office workers have to kill a number of their fellow co-workers or risk being killed themselves in a very twisted workplace experiment.

It at first seems to be an ordinary morning on the job for a group of Americans working for a not-for-profit in a modern office building in Colombia. After noticing that their Colombian colleagues have not arrived for work, office worker Mike (John Gallagher, Jr.) spots some unfamiliar security guards entering a large hangar nearby. Moments later, an icy voice comes over the building’s PA system and calmly explains that the employees must kill a certain number of their co-workers — if not, they will be killed themselves. While the boss (Tony Goldwyn) tries to calm the troops, Mike belatedly realizes that something truly sinister is going on — and when metal doors come sliding down on all the building’s exits and windows, it becomes clear that friends and colleagues are now suddenly enemies in a bloody and brutal battle to the death.

With The Belko Experiment, James Gunn is returning to his horror roots. If you guys will recall, dude wrote and directed Slither, a (very cool) horror film starring Nathan Fillion (Firefly), Elizabeth Banks (Power Rangers) and … Michael Rooker. He also wrote the screenplay for 2004's zombie fest Dawn of the Dead.

The Belko Experiment will open in theaters on March 17, 2017.
