First footage from Tom Cruise's Mummy movie is a lot darker than the old ones

The old Mummy movies starring Brendan Fraser were a zany good time. The reboot with Tom Cruise in the starring role? It’s a bit more serious.

Universal Pictures has dropped the first, brief teaser trailer from the film, which is set in the studio’s new shared universe of classic monsters. In it, we get a peek at Cruise and co-star Russell Crowe in action, plus the scary Egyptian princess who will be causing all the trouble.

The film is largely set in the modern day (say what you will about the Brendan Fraser films, but the period setting was at least fun), and judging by the footage here, tells the story of an ancient princess played by Sofia Boutella (Kingsman: The Secret Service, Star Trek Beyond) who is discovered in a tomb by a group of soldiers. Turns out, she’s not just a dusty old mummy. The studio promises a globe-trotting thriller, and though it looks a lot like every other tentpole blockbuster, this still looks pretty good.

The Mummy opens on June 9, 2017.

The full trailer hits on Sunday. Until then, check out the teaser trailer below and let us know what you think:
