Image(s) of the Day: Towering 23-foot Strawzilla statue

That ominous shape silhouetted on the Japanese horizon is not the real King of Monsters, but an amazing 23-foot-tall facsimile made entirely out of rice straw and bamboo.  Created in the rural town of Chikuzen north of Tokyo for the annual harvest festival taking place Nov. 5-6, a kaiju-loving crew of more than 150 volunteers spent four months weaving piles of leftover straw from the rice harvest into the menacing atomic lizard statue. And just in case it wasn't terrifying enough, workers installed LED lights in the mouth, tail and jagged dorsal fin!
