Casting on Star Trek: Discovery is going roundly with the addition of two new cast members. According to Deadline, Doug Jones (Hellboy, The Strain) and Anthony Rapp (Dazed and Confused, Rent, The Knick) have joined the previously announced Michelle Yeoh (Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) on board CBS’ new Star Trek series.
Star Trek: Discovery will take place a decade before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series and will feature new and returning alien species, an openly gay character and, of course, a brand-new starship in the U.S.S. Discovery (NCC-1031). The show will also revolve around a non-white female lead with the rank of lieutenant commander (she's known to the other crewmembers as “Number One”) instead of the captain of the ship. So, who are Jones and Rapp playing?
Jones has been cast in the role of Lt. Saru, a Starfleet science officer who is from (what else?) a new alien species set to be introduced in the Star Trek universe when Star Trek: Discovery beams onto our TV screens in May 2017. The man who portrayed Abe Sapien in director Guillermo del Toro’s two Hellboy movies is certainly an inspired choice for the role of an alien! Kudos for that casting coup.
Rapp will play Lt. Stamets, who's described as being an astromycologist (I seriously had to look that up), a fungus expert and Starfleet science officer aboard the starship Discovery. According to Entertainment Weekly, Lt. Stamets is the gay character who was previously announced. As for Michelle Yeoh, she’s been confirmed as playing the captain of the starship Shenzhou, but her name is Captain Georgiou and not Han Bo, as was first reported. As for the lead role of “Number One,” it seems that they’re getting close to casting her, so expect some news on that front anytime now. Aaaanyyyyytime ...
Star Trek: Discovery will debut on CBS All Access in the U.S. (with the pilot episode debuting on CBS itself), on Space Channel and Crave TV in Canada, and on Netflix worldwide in 188 countries in May. What do you guys think of the addition of Doug Jones and Anthony Rapp?
