Obi-Wan Kenobi movie not in the Star Wars spin-off plans -- and here's why

If you were waiting for that Obi-Wan Kenobi solo adventure, don't.

According to Entertainment Weekly writer Anthony Breznican (via Slashfilm), the Jedi knight-turned-mentor played by Alec Guinness in the original trilogy and Ewan McGregor in the prequels won't be starring in his own Star Wars anthology film along the lines of Rogue One or the upcoming Han Solo story. This is despite the fact that there has been interest in such a movie from both the fans and McGregor himself, who has often stated that he would enjoy playing the role again.

So why isn't a Kenobi spin-off happening? Breznican told Rebel Force Radio what he had gleaned, noting that it did not come from an official Lucasfilm or Disney source:

“I have heard rumors that the one reason they haven’t moved sooner on Obi-Wan is that they’re not done with Obi-Wan quite yet in the Saga films. So I wouldn’t be surprised to see an Obi-Wan [solo film] happen beyond Episode IX.”

Breznican is theorizing that we might somehow see Obi-Wan again, perhaps in Episode VIII or IX of the main Star Wars movies (we did hear his voice briefly in The Force Awakens). He even takes it one step further, suggesting that old Ben may have a connection to Rey (Daisy Ridley) that has yet to surface:

"I think that there’ll probably be some reference to Obi-Wan in the Saga films, and his connection to whatever characters he happens to have a connection with. I’ve already written that I think that Rey has some kind of connection to him -- family connection. So if that’s the case, maybe we see a part of that play out in the future Obi-Wan movie. Ewan McGregor would be the perfect age to reprise that (character)."

Remember, Breznican has not gotten any official word on this, but based on what he has heard while spending time around both of the latest Star Wars productions, he thinks that a Rey-Kenobi link may end up coming to light in one of the next Star Wars films, thus keeping a Kenobi solo outing on the back burner for the foreseeable future.

Personally -- and we were just discussing this among Blastr staff not long ago -- I'm okay with the notion of never seeing a Kenobi movie. We already have a Han Solo prequel in the works, and there's no great need to see what Obi-Wan was doing in the desert of Tatooine during the 20 years or so between the end of Revenge of the Sith and the beginning of A New Hope. I'd much rather see the Star Wars franchise lean forward than keep looking back.

But seeing Ben make an encore in Episode VIII or IX could be fun, and would be a nice way to tie another of the classic characters into the current storyline without taking a couple of hours for an extended flashback. What do you think -- would you like to see Obi-Wan resurface in the main Star Wars storyline, or are you interested in a full movie filling in some more of his backstory?
