Firefly's Ron Glass passes away at 71

We're just catching up to this now thanks to the holiday, but we're saddened to report that everyone’s favorite shepherd has passed away. Ron Glass, who played Shepherd Derriel Book on the short-lived series Firefly and the sequel film Serenity, died from respiratory failure on Nov. 25. He was 71.

Because I’m old, I remember him as Detective Ron Harris in Barney Miller, a confident, ambitious policeman and the intellectual superior of the police squad. In his next TV show, The New Odd Couple, he played Felix Unger as the same kind of smart character—only much more neurotic.

Other appearances include roles on Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.Star Trek: Voyager and the 1985 version of The Twilight Zone. Voice acting roles include the Superman animated series and video games Fable II and Ancient Space.

But I loved him most for his role as Shepherd Book, who hinted at a dark past yet chose to embrace a kinder philosophy. I even loved him with too much hair.

His fellow Browncoats mourned him on Twitter.

Joss Whedon also noted on Twitter, “If anyone's moved to honor Ron Glass's memory, this is the org he worked with, and they could use the help…wootencenter.org.”
