Darth Maul getting his own solo comic series from Marvel

Since relaunching the Star Wars comic line a few years ago, Marvel has been digging into a whole lot of untold stories across the franchise canon. Now, Darth Maul is getting ready for his own solo run.

USA Today reports Marvel will launch Star Wars: Darth Maul in February 2017, written by Cullen Bunn with art by Luke Ross. The series will serve as a prequel to Star Wars: Episode 1 — The Phantom Menace, and explore Maul’s origin story before his role in The Phantom Menace. As fans are certainly aware, Maul has also popped up in both The Clone Wars and Rebels animated series, so there’s certainly material there to mine.

The report notes Darth Maul will follow Maul while he was still an untested warrior under the tutelage of Darth Sidious (aka the Galactic Emperor). Maul isn’t allowed to hunt down Jedi yet, so he goes after the scum of the cosmic underworld to hone his skills. The five-issue series will track Maul’s mission to track down a Jedi Padawan named Eldra Kaitis who has been captured by a crime lord. Maul wants to test out his skills against a young Jedi, while also making a pitch to turn Kaitis to the dark side.

The creative team said Maul’s experience with the young Jedi will profoundly affect his life, and show his temptation to the light side and how he ended up a Sith.

What do you think of Maul’s solo story? Will you be checking this one out?
