Brandon Thomas has been quietly cranking out one of the most original sci-fi comics of the year over at Image Comics, so we caught up with him to talk all things Horizon.
If you’re unfamiliar, here’s the gist: Horizon focuses on the alien Zhia Malen, who learns her planet is being targeted for occupation by Earth. That’s right — humans are pretty much the bad guys in this story. Thomas has put together a story that weaves together the early seeds of war and misinformation, while managing to put a clever spin on the tried-and-true alien invasion tropes.
We chatted with him about the challenges in crafting a story where Earth is the villain, and what it takes to find the balance to make sure humanity isn’t too evil. He also touches on how the story is told from an alien’s point of view, plus the general narrative challenges inherent with telling a story in the comic medium. How much plot do you divulge early, and how much do you hold back for later issues?
