TV THIS WEEK: Flash and Arrow return, Timeless debuts and a Phineas & Ferb follow-up launches

Welcome to TV This Week! Your one stop shop for all the cool sci-fi and fantasy stuff you should be watching over the next seven days!

The new season is really kicking off in earnest, and we have premieres from half of The CW’s superhero slate hitting this week. Along with heavyhitters like Flash and Arrow, new sci-fi shows like Timeless and Frequency are also making their eagerly awaited debuts in the next few days.

As if that’s not enough, there’s new Star Wars: Rebels, The Strain, Gotham, Lucifer and even a quirky series that could be your new guilty pleasure over on Disney XD.

Highlights of the week

Milo Murphy's Law (Disney XD), Monday 8 p.m. - “Going the Extra Milo; The Undergrounders"

Series premiere! This new Disney XD series comes from the team behind the monster hit Phineas & Ferb, and looks to dabble in sci-fi just as much as its predecessor. The series follows the adventures of the great-great-great-great grandson of the originator of Murphy's Law. In the pilot, a new kid in town learns that even a simple trip to school becomes an adventure when he meets Milo Murphy; and Milo discovers an underground city.


Timeless (NBC), Monday, 10 p.m. - “Pilot”

Series premiere! Time travel looks to be all the rage this year, and this could be one of the most interesting new additions. Timeless follows a team of time travelers who pursue the villain Garcia Flynn to the Hindenburg disaster of 1937. The series, from Shawn Ryan (The Shield, Chicago Code), focuses on a professor, a soldier and a scientist teaming up to travel through time to battle a master criminal out to alter human history.


The Flash (The CW), Tuesday, 7 p.m. - “Flashpoint”

Season premiere! After changing the past at the end of last season, Barry is living his dream life and enjoying his retirement as Kid-Flash keeps the city safe in the Flashpoint universe. But, time always has a way of catching up with you (especially when you’re the Flash).


Arrow (The CW), Wednesday, 7 p.m. - “Legacy”

Season premiere! The fifth season kicks off with a deadly new criminal, Tobias Church, threatening Star City. Overwhelmed and with a lack of support, Oliver considers forming a new team of heroes to help defend Star City. In flashbacks, Oliver faces off against the Bratva in Russia.


Frequency (The CW), Wednesday, 8 p.m. - “Pilot”

Series premiere! Based on the film of the same name, this high-concept procedural follows a detective who discovers she's able to communicate with her estranged father who died decades earlier via a ham radio. She then warns him off his untimely death, leading him to survive, but also dramatically changing the present.


Gotham (Fox), Monday, 8 p.m. - “Mad City: Look Into My Eyes”

Penguin launches his bid for mayor, while the Mad Hatter shows up in Gotham City and hires Gordon to help find his sister, Alice. Bruce's look-alike begins to channel him, causing confusion around Gotham.

The Big Bang Theory (CBS), Monday, 8 p.m. - “The Dependence Transcendence”

Tensions rise when the boys struggle to complete their government project on time and Sheldon tries an energy drink to stay awake


Lucifer (Fox), Monday 9 p.m. - “Liar, Liar, Slutty Dress on Fire”

Lucifer's mother turns up at the scene of a gruesome murder and claims she's innocent, but Lucifer is suspicious of her claim. So he enlists Maze to keep an eye on her while he investigates the case with Chloe.


Timeless (NBC), Monday, 10 p.m. - “Pilot”

Aftermath (Syfy), Tuesday, 9 p.m. - “In Rats Alley”

The Copelands continue to search for their daughter while facing catastrophic solar flares, demons and beasts that they had thought were mythological, but now discover are terrifyingly real in this post-apocalyptic thriller.


Halt and Catch Fire (AMC), Tuesday, 9 p.m. - “You Are Not Safe”

Donna, Bos and Diane go on the road to build support for Mutiny. Meanwhile, everyone else anxiously awaits the big day; and Joe asks Cam for a favor.


Arrow (The CW), Wednesday, 7 p.m. - “Legacy”

Blindspot (NBC), Wednesday, 7 p.m. - “If Beth”

A museum-gala assassin is sought by the team. Meanwhile, Nas and Weller work on their coleadership; and Jane begins to see some positive aspects of her old organization.


Frequency (The CW), Wednesday, 8 p.m. - “Pilot”

Ghost Hunters (Syfy), Wednesday, 8 p.m. - “Stone Cold Colonists”

The former home of a surgeon is thought to be haunted by the restless spirits of the doctor's subjects of research. Later, TAPS try to bring peace to an 1800s jail as they encounter the ghosts of its long-deceased insane and indigent inhabitants.


NOVA (PBS), Wednesday, 8 p.m. - “Great Human Odyssey”

How early humans migrated out of Africa and populated the world. Included: insights from historians, anthropologists, archaeologists and geneticists.

American Horror Story: 6 (FX), Wednesday, 9 p.m. - “Chapter 4”

Chapter 4 of "American Horror Story: 6.”


Paranormal Witness (Syfy), Wednesday, 9 p.m. - “The Jail”

A prison guard fears for his safety working the night shift at Estrella Jail in Phoenix, where legend has it that the spirit of a violent criminal is responsible for driving inmates and officers crazy, and even to their deaths.


The Good Place (NBC), Thursday, 7:30 p.m. - “Category 55 Emergency Doomsday Crisis”

Eleanor eagerly wants to learn ethics from Chidi, but it turns into a full-time job he never wanted. Also, Michael and Janet sharpen attention on a Neighborhood emergency.


MacGyver (CBS), Friday, 7 p.m. - “Awl”

The team head to Malaysia in search of a man funding a terrorist group, but their plan changes into keeping him alive after he is shot.

Z Nation (Syfy), Friday, 8 p.m. - “Escorpion and the Red Hand”

Murphy's new cult attracts more and more followers, while the rest of the gang find themselves stuck in the middle of a war.


The Exorcist (Fox), Friday, 8 p.m. - “Chapter Three: Let 'Em In”

Kat copes with Julia's death, but struggles to accept the realization of it. Also: Marcus and Tomas get shocking news after taking footage from the Rance home to papal emissaries.


Van Helsing (Syfy), Friday, 9 p.m. - “Coming Back”

Vanessa and Mohamad head into the vampire-controlled streets in search of Dylan, the daughter that Vanessa orphaned when she "died." Back at the hospital, Cynthia is discovered dead of an apparent suicide. But then Doc starts to suspect that a killer could be amongst the group.


Marvel's Ultimate Spider-Man vs. the Sinister 6 (Disney XD), Saturday, 8 p.m. - “Spider Slayers - Part 1”

Spider-Man teams with former traitor Scarlet Spider to stop Doc Ock from reawakening a secret program designed to create evil duplicates of Spider-Man.

Star Wars: Rebels (Disney XD), Saturday, 8:30 p.m. - “The Antilles Extraction”

Sabine goes undercover as a cadet in the Empire's elite flight academy to help free several young pilots who want to defect to the rebellion.


Outside of Star Wars, Saturday is a relatively quiet one. Either check out some college football, or catch up on whatever’s been banking on your DVR.


Once Upon A Time (ABC), Sunday, 8 p.m. - "The Other Shoe"

The untold story of Cinderella will turn romance into revenge! And there are more lost tales on the way, including the magical Aladdin and Jasmine.


Ash vs. Evil Dead (Starz), Sunday, 8 p.m. - “The Morgue”

Ash and his pals continue their wild adventure in Season 2.


Westworld (HBO), Sunday, 9 p.m. - “Chestnut”

Maeve's emotions are tweaked by Elsie to prevent a recall; Lee floats his latest narrative to the staff; Bernard and Theresa investigate the extent of a host aberration; two guests arrive looking for different scenarios; the Man in Black enlists a condemned man to learn Westworld's darkest secrets.


The Strain (FX), Sunday, 10 p.m. - “”Collaborators”

Setrakian creates a new plan to trap the Master as Eph and Dutch search for the Master's "voice." Also: Palmer fights for his life and needs Setrakian's access to the white and Fet suffers a tough personal loss that reveals a deep family secret.
