Hit fantasy novel The Alchemist coming to the big screen

Paulo Coelho’s 1988 fantasy novel The Alchemist has been read by more than 65 million people, and almost 30 years since its release, it’s finally coming to the big screen.

Deadline reports producer Laurence Fishburne is helping the project move forward, following some behind-the-scenes shake-ups involving the film rights. With most of those kinks worked out, the project is eyeing a mid-2017 production date. The studio hopes to release it in 2018.

The novel tells the magical story of Santiago, an Andalusian shepherd boy who yearns to travel in search of a worldly treasure as extravagant as any ever found. It’s a classic story about dealing with life and the changes it can bring, and with the right approach, could certainly translate well to the big screen.

“Like most fans of the book, I remember where I was when I first read The Alchemist,” TriStar president Hannah Minghella said in a statement. “It is a story I have returned to over the years and it has long been a dream to bring this insightful, magical and cinematic adventure to the screen. It’s easy to see why the book has connected with more than 65 million people around the world, and we’re committed to making a film that authentically captures its power and expands its reach.”

Are you glad to see The Alchemist finally getting a shot?
