Thief of Thieves artist on the James Bond influences in Kirkman's comic about a master thief

It seems like everything Robert Kirkman touches these days winds up on television, and his thief-focused series Thief of Thieves is already in development AMC. Of course. But what’s up with the comic series these days?

We caught up with artist Shawn Martinbrough to talk about the series at New York Comic Con 2016, and he said it’s been interesting to explore such a grounded story though the comic medium, and along the way, he’s been deeply influenced by the look and flourishes of James Bond stories. So look closely, because there are certainly some homages sprinkled around in there.

He also talks about the current arc, which he said will be considerably upping the ante for action and set pieces in a Thief of Thieves story. Considering everything the series has done in the years since its 2010 launch, that's saying something. As for the ending? Martinbrough says this story is leading to a final scene on a “not-so-happy” note. Uh-oh.

The comic series itself was created by Kirkman, though a selection of different writers actually handle the scripting duties. The list includes heavy hitters such as Kirkman (duh), Nick Spencer, James Asmus and Andy Diggle.
