First look at Marvel Comics' relaunched Venom, but who's behind the mask?

Marvel is relaunching several of its comics in the wake of Civil War II, and now we have a first look at Venom’s latest adventure. But it really just asks more questions than it answers.

The most recent run, Venom: Space Knight, was a crazy romp through the cosmos that tasked Venom and Flash Thompson with righting wrongs all over the universe. The series was weird, sure, but also a lot of fun. With the new-look series, simply titled Venom, Marvel looks to be taking the character in a more mature direction.

The new series will trade the universe for the “choked alleys and darkened streets” of New York City, and Marvel promises a “new Venom.” To that end, we still don’t know who is actually under the mask and wearing the symbiote (or heck, if anyone is actually wearing it). Also, if there is someone in there, who is actually in control? The last arc of Space Knight asked a lot of questions about the Klyntar symbiote, and we saw Venom develop a personality of his own, along with the ability to act independent of Flash. Could that factor into the new series?

The Venom series will be led by the creative team of Mike Costa (Web Warriors) and Gerardo Sandoval (New Avengers).

The first issue of Venom hits Nov. 23.
