Take a bite out of the Apple of Eden in new Assassin's Creed footage

Some fresh footage from the big-screen adaptation of Assassin’s Creed finally introduced a major element from the video game series.

Starring Michael Fassbender, Marion Cotillard, Jeremy Irons and Ariane Labed, the live-action film based on Ubisoft’s hit video game franchise will introduce new lead characters in former death-row inmate Callum Lynch and his ancestor Aguilar (both played by Fassbender), a 15th-century Spanish assassin who fought against the evil (in the games) Templars during the Spanish Inquisition. Even though it’s a brand-new story, the movie will be part of the official Assassin’s Creed canon, which includes games, books and comics.

The video below features interviews with director Justin Kurzel (Hamlet) and Fassbender and features snippets of new footage, a cool behind-the-scenes look at the stunts and wire work (if you haven’t seen the dizzying “Leap of Faith” video yet, you can go have a look at the jaw-dropping stunt right here) and the introduction of one very important staple of the video games: the Apple of Eden.

Through a revolutionary technology that unlocks his genetic memories, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender) experiences the adventures of his ancestor, Aguilar, in 15th Century Spain. Callum discovers he is descended from a mysterious secret society, the Assassins, and amasses incredible knowledge and skills to take on the oppressive and powerful Templar organization in the present day.

Assassin’s Creed opens in movie theaters on Dec. 21.
