Sony fast-tracks Uncharted movie with Stranger Things director Shawn Levy

Finally! Sony Pictures has put its Uncharted movie on the fast track and nabbed Shawn Levy (The Internship, Stranger Things) to sit in the director’s chair.

The movie is a live-action adaptation of Naughty Dog’s hit video game franchise featuring a treasure hunter named Nathan Drake (voiced by the always excellent Nolan North) who travels the globe in search of fabled treasures. If you’ve never played the PlayStation title before, think of Uncharted as Tomb Raider mixed in with a good dose of Indiana Jones and a dash of National Treasure.

But Nathan Drake is so. much. more. than a simple Indy copy, you guys, and since 2008 the character has grown into his own man — he’s charming, possesses an awesome sense of humor and has great hair — over the course of five videogames: Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves, Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception, Uncharted: Golden Abyss (exclusively for the PlayStation Vita and I'm not counting that card game) and the newest one of the bunch and my personal fave, Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End, which was released earlier this year.

The script for the Uncharted movie was penned by Joe Carnahan (The A-Team, The Blacklist), who originally wanted to helm the movie himself but had to leave the gig because of his commitment to direct the Will Smith/Martin Lawrence vehicle Bad Boys for Life.

Being my favorite video game franchise EVER (alongside God of War), this news is like getting an early Christmas present wrapped with a pink bow on top. I’m really curious to see just how fast things will move for the movie project now and can’t wait to see who they’ll cast in the role of Nathan Drake. The one actor I can think about who fully embodies all of Nathan Drake’s quirks, charm and sense of humor is Chris Pratt (Guardians of the Galaxy). I wonder if that’s yet another franchise he’d like to sign on the dotted line for (although he apparently passed on the role when he was offered it back in 2014. But that was 2 years ago and with a new director at the helm, Pratt can still change his mind, right?).

What do you think? Are you guys excited to see that Sony is fast-tracking Uncharted for the big screen? Chime in with your personal choices for Nathan Drake, Sully (Bruce Campbell, anyone?) and Elena below!
