After getting our first glimpse of the lead antagonist in Logan, now we know for sure how he ties into the comic books.
It was just last week that we were treated to an image of Boyd Holbrook as the nefarious Pierce in Logan, the third standalone Wolverine movie and second written and directed by James Mangold. As Collider points out, Pierce was involved in two major storylines in the X-Men comics canon: one involved the Hellfire Club while the other was about a team of cyborg assassins called the Reavers.
And now thanks to the official Instagram page for the film, we know definitively who Pierce and the villains are:
That's right, it's the Reavers, the team of killers obsessed with taking out mutants and Wolverine in particular. They were first introduced in Uncanny X-Men #229 in May 1988 by writer Chris Claremont, who positioned them as a team of cyborgs operating out of an underground complex in a remote part of Australia. The original team was destroyed by the X-Men, save for three members who later regrouped under the leadership of Donald Pierce, who combined them with members of the Hellfire Club to create a deadly mutant assassination squad.
How much of that will make it into the movie remains to be seen, along with whether Reavers like Bonebreaker, Skullbuster and Pretty Boy will show up (another member, Lady Deathstrike, is not likely to appear since she was killed off way back in X2). Also unclear is whether Mangold's version of the Reavers will in fact be cyborgs or just regular humans, although hopefully it will be the former to give poor Logan some real grief.
Hopefully we'll find out more soon via a trailer or some additional plot details, but in the meantime feel free to discuss the involvement of the Reavers below. Logan, featuring Hugh Jackman in his final appearance as the Wolverine, along with Patrick Stewart, Stephen Merchant, Richard E. Grant, and Elizabeth Rodriguez, opens March 3, 2017.
