Disney reveals the story behind this fan favorite Star Wars: The Force Awakens character

Remember that stormtrooper who engaged in battle a lightsaber-wielding Finn (John Boyega) and called him a traitor? Well, he’s become a huge sensation and has inspired memes, fan art and parody videos, dubbed TR-8R (get it?). Well, Disney's taken notice of all the hoopla and has revealed the origin of this fan-favorite character!

First off, he’s got a name and nope, it’s not TR-8R (although it was kind of a great name). The stormtrooper’s name is FN-2199 (but his friends call him Nines), and he and Finn have a lot of history. According to Greg Rucka’s awesome book Before the Awakening, Nines trained and served on the same squad as FN-2187 (our Finn) in the First Order, explaining the reason why he wasn't a happy galactic camper when he saw Finn during the attack on Maz Kanata's (Lupita Nyong'o) Castle. He’s also the guy with the red hair in the illustration below. StarWars.com adds:

There’s a reason that Nines gets to use an awesome weapon (which is called a Z6 baton). He’s riot control, and part of an elite squad that enforces order or squashes uprisings. While their weapons are non-lethal in theory, the Z6 can definitely cause harm or kill an opponent when used with brute force. Look, if a lightsaber can’t cut it, you know it ain’t good news.

Cool, uh? As for who provided the voice, it’s a sound editor from Skywalker Sound named David Acord, while the one who did the baton spinning inside that armor is a stunt veteran by the name of Lian Yang.

What do you think of FN-2199 in Star Wars: The Force Awakens? Was he a favorite of yours?
