Steven Moffat says he's 'actively engaged' in the search for a new Doctor Who showrunner

Everyone knows showrunner Steven Moffat has been tirelessly steering the Doctor Who ship ever since Season 5 back in 2010. At the time, the series also marked the beginning of Matt Smith’s tenure as the Eleventh Doctor. New showrunner. New Doctor. New TARDIS.

But when Smith left in 2013, Moffat stayed.

While Steven Moffat is confirmed to return as showrunner for Season 10 (along with Peter Capaldi as Twelve), he is keenly aware that all good things always come to an end and that there will be a time when he’ll have to hand over the keys to someone worthy of the TARDIS.

For now, no one knows who might be in line to step into Moffat’s larger-on-the-inside shoes as Who showrunner, but he revealed he was currently “actively engaged” in finding THE ONE who will take over the longest-running sci-fi series in TV history from him, even though it'll be hard to let go. Speaking to Radio Times, Moffat said:

“That is an issue and one I’m actively engaged in but I can’t say much about that. Everything is difficult in Doctor Who, including leaving, and I would never do anything to harm it. I would never leave it in the lurch because it means too much to me. Yes, it’s a problem. Let’s not pretend it’s not a big problem. But there will be a solution.

In terms of the emotional difficulty of leaving, it’s hard … I take it a year at a time and that’s the only answer I’ll ever give on that one. How hard [will it be to give up], I don’t know … I won’t be leaving because I’m suddenly miserable. It’ll be because I want to do something else.”

How about more Sherlock? OK, OK, that’s just wishful thinking on my part. I know everyone is super busy (*cough* Benedict Cumberbatch *cough*) filming lots of movies and TV series and such, so I'm not holding my breath. But a girl can dream, right?

When he was asked if he would be back to write some Doctor Who episodes after his tenure as showrunner's ended, Steven Moffat said he wasn’t sure.

“I’ve no idea until I’m there,” he admitted. “I mean, I can understand Russell [T Davies choosing not to]. I’m gobsmacked by how much Doctor Who I’ve written – an insane amount.”

So the search for a new showrunner is on, but when Steven Moffat will pass the baton to someone else is still up in the air, and it won’t happen before production on Season 11 looms for sure. Who would you like to see as the new Doctor Who showrunner? Any favorite(s)?
