Earlier tonight, The CW premiered DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League, a half-hour special devoted to the upcoming rollout of Warner Bros.' DC Comics' cinematic universe. Over the course of the program, host Kevin Smith and guest Geoff Johns (Chief Creative Officer of DC Entertainment) offered a number of enticing teasers, including our first real footage from the upcoming Wonder Woman film, but the centerpiece was without question the first full trailer for the second DC Comics film of 2016: Suicide Squad.
Though Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice is certainly the DC film with the most attention at the moment, Squad is not without its appeal. Written and directed by David Ayer (Fury), it's the first villain/antihero team-up movie we've seen in the Shared Universe Era from DC, and it features the live-action movie debut of everyone from Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) to Deadshot (Will Smith). Depending on how this film goes, the DC Cinematic Universe could completely change course, and though the first trailer definitely focused on a lot of darkness (apart from a laugh or two), the second is all about bringing the fun. Check it out:
I'm already seeing comparisons online to the Guardians of the Galaxy trailers, which is inevitable when you decide to set your promo to "Bohemian Rhapsody," but that aside, this looks like so much fun. We've been worried for so long that the DC Cinematic Universe would be some kind of barren, self-serious landscape full of nothing but grit and brooding, and then this trailer comes along as if to assure us that at least one filmmaker tied to this studio is out to give us a few knowing winks. I mean, Killer Croc has a swamp prison cell in this trailer. That alone's enough to sell me.
Suicide Squad arrives Aug. 5. Let's just hope it's as crazy as this trailer makes it out to be, because if it is it could be the comic-book movie of the year.
