TV THIS WEEK: The X-Files returns, Legends of Tomorrow premieres, and more!

After weeks of most of our shows being on break and weeks without many new premieres, we've got our first big TV week of the new year. In the coming days, we'll see a special celebrating Captain America, a special celebrating the dawn of the DC Comics Cinematic Universe and the premiere of the CW's third superhero series, Legends of Tomorrow. Oh, and a little show called The X-Files is back on TV for the first time in nearly 14 years.

Check out the week in TV below. What's on your watchlist?

Captain America: 75 Heroic Years (ABC) Tuesday, 8 p.m.

One-hour special! - Captain America turns 75 this year, and to celebrate, Marvel Studios is using its ABC connection to air a one-hour documentary special celebrating the character's legacy. Guests will include Stan Lee (of course), Marvel Chief Creative Officer Joe Quesada, Marvel Television head Jeph Loeb, and Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg and Ming-Na Wen. I'm hoping for lots of Jack Kirby and Joe Simon talk ... and more Civil War footage.

Agent Carter (ABC) Tuesday, 9 p.m. - "The Lady in the Lake" and "A View in the Dark"

Series premiere! - Last year, Agent Carter was a sort of Grand Experiment for Marvel Studios, an attempt to take a supporting character and spin her off into something unlike anything else (expect perhaps Captain America: The First Avenger) in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It's not only the first Marvel Studios property led by a woman, but also a period piece, a science-fiction-infused spy thriller, and the kind of show that might make viewers of The Avengers scoff at its scope. All of the same questions that met Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. met Agent Carter, and then some, so it was heartening to find that -- thanks to attention to detail, thrilling writing and an amazing performance by Hayley Atwell in the title role -- the show worked. Now, for Season 2, Agent Carter heads to Los Angeles, where it will continue to shape the early days of the Marvel Universe. We just hope it keeps working. Check out a preview below.

DC Films Presents: Dawn of the Justice League (CW) Tuesday, 9:30 p.m.

Half-hour special! - Not to be outdone, Warner Bros. is also trotting out a tribute to its cinematic heroes this week, with a look at how the DC Cinematic Universe will shape up in the coming years. We don't yet know everything this special will feature, but we do know to expect a new trailer for Suicide Squad and a new look at the universe's first female-led superhero flick, Wonder Woman. That alone is enough for me to tune in.

Legends of Tomorrow (CW) Thursday, 8 p.m. - "Pilot, Part 1"

Series premiere! - At long last, a superhero team-up show that's not a cartoon has arrived. I've written before about how impressed I am with the ambition of the CW superhero shows. Who would have thought five years ago that we'd see live-action versions of Gorilla Grodd and King Shark on television, and now we're heading into potentially even crazier territory with this time-traveling sci-fi adventure series starring the likes of the Atom, Firestorm, Hawkman, Hawkgirl and Vandal Savage. There are a number of reasons to hope this show works out, but "live-action Vandal Savage" is absolutely at the top for me. Check out a preview below.

The X-Files (FOX) Sunday, 10 p.m. - "My Struggle"

Season premiere! - For more than a decade, fans had a dream of an X-Files revival, and while we got a version of one through the I Want to Believe film, it wasn't enough. Then creator Chris Carter and stars Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny couldn't stop talking about it, and our hopes swelled. Now it's no longer a dream. This is real. In a matter of a few short days, The X-Files is coming back, and it's arguably the most exciting thing to happen to nerds like us since The Force Awakens. Over the next month or so, we'll get six new episodes of the beloved series, bookended by a premiere and a finale that will continue the show's classic mythology. Mulder and Scully aren't FBI agents anymore, but there is a new conspiracy to unravel, and Mulder just can't give up that search for The Truth. I don't know how excited you are for this, but personally, I just might cry when I finally see the Cigarette Smoking Man again. Check out a preview below.
