Looks like Marvel and Netflix may be going ahead with that Punisher spinoff series after all.
According to a report over at TV Line, Jon Bernthal’s (The Walking Dead) take on Marvel vigilante Frank Castle, aka the Punisher, is so freakin’ awesome, Netflix is apparently getting pretty darn close to giving the green light to a whole series centered on his character. YAY!
As you all know, the gun-toting vigilante is set to make his punishing appearance on the Man Without Fear’s turf of Hell’s Kitchen in the upcoming second season of Daredevil, along with Matt Murdock’s (Charlie Cox) ex, the sai-wielding Elektra (Elodie Yung).
A few weeks ago, Daredevil executive producer Doug Petrie said of Bernthal’s Punisher:
“Viewers watching the show will be rooting for this guy with a gun but we’re also going to force people — the way we force Matt — to second-guess themselves,” Petrie says. “Taking lethal justice into your own hands in America in 2015 is tricky s–t. We have not shied away from the rich complicated reality of Now. If you’ve got a gun and you’re not the police you’re going to incite strong feelings. We’re stirring the pot and we’re aware of the headlines where we live and we’re trying to get people to think.”
The series hasn’t been confirmed yet, so take it all with a grain of salt (at least for now), but if it’s a GO, it’ll be the sixth Marvel series on Netflix’s ever-growing roster of Marvel superhero series, including Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist, all leading up to The Defenders.
I don't know about you guys, but seeing the powers-that-be so excited about Jon Bernthal’s performance, to the point of giving him his own series, makes me confident Marvel and Netflix will finally make good on the character after a series of mediocre movies (at best) about one of Marvel's most controversial comic-book characters.
Are you looking forward to seeing Jon Bernthal's performance as the Punisher on Daredevil? What do you think of the character possibly getting his own Netflix series?
Daredevil Season 2 premieres on Netflix March 18.
