Here's who might play the Queen of Atlantis in Aquaman

An actress new to the superhero genre is in talks to play Mera, Queen of Atlantis, in Aquaman.

That actress is Amber Heard, whom The Wrap reports is negotiating with Warner Bros. to play the wife of Jason Momoa's Aquaman in the DC Extended Universe. Her credits include All the Boys Love Mandy Lane, Zombieland, Pineapple Express, Drive Angry, 3 Days to Kill and The Danish Girl.

If the deal goes through, Heard will first turn up next year in Justice League before moving over to Aquaman. The former movie is being directed by Zack Snyder, while James Wan (Furious 7) is on board to helm the latter. Aquaman himself will be glimpsed for the first time two months from now in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Mera was first introduced in the comics in 1963, in Aquaman #11, where it was explained that she was the queen of the mysterious "Dimension Aqua." As with everyone in the comics, however, her origin story was revamped and it turned out that she was an escapee from Xebel, an extra-dimensional penal colony to which a separatist group of Atlanteans was banished years earlier in a civil war.

She was originally sent back to our dimension to kill Aquaman in retaliation for the exile of her people, but ended up falling for him. Mera's powers include the ability to briefly control large amounts of water and form solid objects out of it as well.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Aquaman is currently on a "dual track development" plan, which means that two separate screenplays are being written at the same time: one by David Leslie Johnson (The Conjuring 2) and another by Kurt Johnstad (300). The two men will then slap each other repeatedly about the head with their scripts and whoever is left standing will see his produced (OK, maybe not).

Justice League is set for release on November 17, 2017, while Aquaman will surface on July 27, 2018. Thoughts on Amber Heard as Mera?
