Legends of Tomorrow will go back to the Old West to meet Jonah Hex

Even in light of all the comic-book territory already covered by The Flash and Arrow, The CW's new series Legends of Tomorrow looks really ambitious. The DC Comics-inspired series isn't just giving us a time-travel-laden plot involving iconic villain Vandal Savage; It's also giving us a massive superhero team that includes Firestorm, White Canary, The Atom, Hawkman, Hawkgirl and more. Now another big name is joining the series: Jonah Hex.

The legendary gunfighter and bounty hunter will reportedly make a guest appearance on the series' 11th episode, and might end up with a recurring role after that, according to executive producer Marc Guggenheim. So why is a show with the word "Tomorrow" in the title hooking up with a western comic-book hero? Well, because when you've established that your characters can time-travel, why not?

“Ever since we decided that Legends would involve time travel, we were eager to do a story set in the Old West,” Guggenheim told EW. “But if you’re going to do a story set in the DC Universe version of the Old West, you simply must include Jonah Hex in it. We’re thrilled about bringing another well known, beloved DC character to television.”

In DC Comics, Hex is a deadly bounty hunter with a scar on his face known as "The Mark of the Demon," which he got after a fight with a Native American rival. In various DC continuities, he's been everywhere from Civil War battlefields to 19th-century Gotham City to the year 2050, and he's done everything from battling in Crisis on Infinite Earths to morphing into a Black Lantern during the Blackest Night event. It'll be interesting to see how Legends of Tomorrow uses him, and whether he'll end up sticking around. There's no word yet on who'll play the iconic character (he was previously played in a feature film by Josh Brolin, but we don't like to talk about that), but given that Legends premieres in a little more than a week, it probably won't be long until we get some casting news.

Legends of Tomorrow premieres Jan. 21 on The CW.
