Doctor Who spinoff series Class coming to BBC America

Ever since it was announced back in October that a Doctor Who spinoff titled Class would be heading to BBC Three in 2016, we’ve all been wondering if the show would hit us here, stateside. Well, wonder no more, because the series is coming to BBC America. YAY!

The news was announced this Friday at the Television Critics Association in Pasadena, Calif. YA novelist Patrick Ness (A Monster Calls) has been tapped to write the upcoming 8-episode series that’ll be set in Coal Hill School where the 12th Doctor’s (Peter Capaldi) former companion, Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) used to teach, but the series will not involve her since she’s currently both deceased and traveling through time and space (it's all very timey-wimey) aboard her own TARDIS with her immortal companion, Ashildr, aka Me (Maisie Williams).

“I’m astounded and thrilled to be entering the Doctor Who universe, which is as vast as time and space itself,” said Ness. “I can’t wait for people to meet the heroes of ‘Class,’ to meet the all-new villains and aliens, to remember that the horrors of the darkest corners of existence are just about on par with having to pass your exams,” he joked.

And because it’s a new new, new series, don’t expect to see your favorite Who villains pop up any time soon, because Ness wants to put his own spin to Class. Here’s what he said back in October:

“I want to show the world new stuff,” he says. “I want to have new things that maybe we haven’t seen before. That’s my goal. That’s what I’m aiming for — shock you with something new. Something like the Weeping Angels, which I think are great, are brand new. Steven Moffat invented them a couple seasons ago. There’s not going to be any weeping angels on Class, but I’m just saying that they’re something new to the Doctor Who universe that are just awesome, and I would like to do that.”

The spinoff set to air sometime in the fall of 2016 is being filmed in Cardiff and will be executive produced by Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat and Brian Minchin and is a co-production between BBC America and BBC Cymru Wales.
