How Doctor Who’s Jenna-Louise Coleman almost became River Song (sorta)

As actors know, acting is hard work, but Ianding the role is just as difficult. While Jenna-Louise Coleman received the role of Clara and/or Oswin Oswald in Doctor Who, it wasn’t the first time she had auditioned. It seems we could have known her for a completely different role...

...As Melody, Amy Pond’s BFF, who eventually regenerates into River Song.

According to Radio Times, Coleman, who appeared this weekend with Karen Gillan (Amy Pond) at Canadian convention FanExpo, said, “I’ve got good gossip! Did you know… that I auditioned for Mels? That’s one part I didn’t get, and my grandmother was so upset...”

Much to Coleman’s grandmother’s dismay, the role in the episode “Let’s Kill Hitler” went to Nina Toussaint-White.

It seems that Coleman was able to laugh it off. “I never thought they would have cast us as childhood best mates because the height difference was too much...I thought, ‘I’m never going to get that part.’”

Had she been cast as Melody, it might have affected her chances of securing the co-starring role at a later time—in most other shows. However, previous appearances never bothered Doctor Who’s casting director when it came to Freema Agyeman (Martha Jones/Adeola in “Army of Ghosts”), Peter Capaldi (the Doctor/Caecilius in “The Fires of Pompeii”), and even Gillan (Amy Pond/Soothsayer in “The Fires of Pompeii”).
