Meet the Ares 3 crew and learn of their mission statement in new The Martian images

The Martian - A Ridley Scott film starring Matt Damon

In order to whet our appetite for director Ridley Scott’s upcoming sci-fi movie The Martian, the good folks over at 20th Century Fox have released an awesome Mission Guide for the Ares 3 crew.

The Matt Damon-starrer is garnering some very positive buzz (it currently stands at a whopping 97% fresh on Rotten Tomatoes) as we speak, following recent screenings to members of the press and at the Toronto International Film Festival. The film was even screened in space for the crew of the International Space Station.

The 17-pages-long Ares 3 Complete Mission Guide gives us a nifty look at NASA’s (fictional) mission statement and offers us great detailed bios and images of the astronauts. Check out the gallery below (click the images to see them at full size), and let us know what you think.

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.
