Viewers love easter eggs -- that is, secret little nods in media to people who pay attention, like references to films in other films (such as the R2-D2 in Raiders of the Lost Ark or Alfred Hitchcock’s appearance in his own movies). Easter eggs are not shout-outs; instead, they are whispers. And there’s a huge one in Guardians of the Galaxy ...
... but we don’t know what it is.
According to CinemaBlend, GotG’s writer and director James Gunn wrote on his Facebook page, “[GotG easter eggs] have not all been found. No one has found the big one, really. Maybe once someone came close.”
GotG has a veritable plethora of easter eggs, from the appearance of Howard the Duck to a reference to bro-comedy The Hangover. And the Marvel Cinematic Universe movies and TV shows are so full of easter eggs it looks like the Easter Bunny had once carried them in a basket.
But many eggs are so subtle that it takes viewers with eagle eyes and trigger fingers to capture to right moment. For example, only the most observant picked up on the fact that the Bride’s name was first given in Kill Bill: Volume 1 on an airplane ticket and not spoken aloud in Volume 2.
It seems strange that of all the people who devour movie minutiae hadn’t picked up on “the big one.” But of all people to know if it’s been found, it would be Gunn.
And as of right now, he’s the only one to know the easter egg ... hopefully, not for much longer.
