Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beasts gains more star power with Colin Farrell

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, the first spinoff film from the mega-popular Harry Potter franchise, was a must-see for many Potterheads the moment it was announced. The film will take us to a different time and place in the Wizarding World (New York in the 1920s), introduce us to new characters and new magical ideas, and mark the screenwriting debut of Potter's creator, J.K. Rowling. That alone is enough to get most fans to buy a ticket.

As the development of the film has gone on, though, it's gotten consistently more interesting, to the point that even casual fans have to be taking notice. First came the news that David Yates, the director who brought us the final four films in the Potter series, would return to helm this film. Then we found out that Oscar winner Eddie Redmayne (The Theory of Everything) would play the film's lead, Magizoologist Newt Scamander. Then the supporting cast came to include Katherine Waterston (Inherent Vice) and Ezra Miller (The Perks of Being a Wallflower). Now we've got yet another reason to get excited.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Irish actor Colin Farrell -- who can be seen right now in the second season of HBO's True Detective -- has also joined the Fantastic Beasts cast. Farrell is set to play Graves, a wizard Scamander encounters during his New York adventures, and though that's all we know about the role right now, having an actor like Farrell on board makes the film more interesting. He's a star with a very diverse set of acting skills, and he could bring just the right amount of charisma and weirdness to the flick.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them arrives Nov. 18, 2016.
