First descriptions of concept art showing Benedict Cumberbatch as Doctor Strange emerge

Ever since it was announced Benedict Cumberbatch had been cast in the title role of Dr. Stephen Strange in Marvel's upcoming comic-book movie, we’ve been wondering what the Sherlock actor would look like.

We still haven’t seen anything from the movie yet, but we may have the next best thing: descriptions of the first piece of concept art (NOT the pic above) from the movie showing the actor in both his guises as Stephen Strange and the Sorcerer Supreme, as well as some new details about the movie.

First things first.

Via an article over at Screen Daily, cinematographer Ben Davis — who did some brilliant work on Guardians of the Galaxy and Avengers: Age of Ultron — has confirmed that he will be the director of photography on the eagerly anticipated "Phase Three" Marvel movie. Davis also dropped some intriguing tidbits about the superhero film, calling it "Marvel’s Fantasia."

"It has a very psychedelic grounding, and it’s not your typical Marvel action movie. Most of the work within it is about other dimensions. And I described it, I think, when I was talking to Marvel as Marvel’s Fantasia, in a way, because it’s so sort of out there and different to everything else that they’ve done.

"There’s a lot of previsualisation, and there’s a lot of work which is very hard – you look at it and you see the imagery that they’ve created for it and you think, ‘well how the hell do we shoot that!?’ because it’s all sort of Escher stuff.

"It’s all very out there,” he continued. “I can’t really say much more about it, I’m afraid. But I think it’ll be really interesting, and it’s a very dark movie, I’m pleased to say. DP’s always love the word ‘dark’. The trouble is that most producers don’t like dark. Mostly you get into DI [Digital Intermediate process] and people don’t seem to like dark anymore!"

While the movie’s overall plot is being kept tightly under wraps, the comic-book source material follows the story of Stephen Strange, a brilliant and arrogant former neurosurgeon who, through discovery of magic, becomes a better man and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, Earth’s primary protector against magical and mystical threats.

As for how Cumberbatch will physically look in the role in and out of his Doctor Strange costume, we have some vague descriptions of concept art showcased by Disney's African division a few days back. The first one is from HTXT.Africa, who said:

Doctor Strange looks dark. Very dark. As in scraping the edge of ‘horror-movie-dark’ and information imparted about the film from Marvel Studios head, Kevin Feige, supports this appraisal. According to Feige, the film will have a firm footing in the shadowy world of the occult and supernatural. While we’re not expecting it to be a true blue horror film, but if it could provide as many chills as say Constantine (the TV series, NOT the film), then that would be great. Oh, and Benedict Cumberbatch looks very fetching in his Doctor Strange get-up. Very fetching indeed…

And here are a couple tweets that tease the overall look of the character, including confirmation that THERE WILL BE A GOATEE! Check them out:

With filming on the movie gearing up for a November start in the U.K., hopefully Marvel will release those pieces of concept art sooner rather than later. Doctor Strange will hit movie theaters on Nov. 4, 2016. Are you looking forward to Marvel's darkest movie?
