Chloe Moretz repels an alien invasion in first trailer for new sci-fi flick The 5th Wave

Will the stream of young adult dystopian adaptations ever cease? Not if The 5th Wave has anything to say about it.

The movie is the latest to hit screens based on a best-selling and acclaimed novel (from author Rick Yancey), and in this case the story focuses on life after the onslaught of an extraterrestrial invasion. Chloe Moretz (Let Me In, Kick-Ass) plays Cassie, a young woman who has survived four successive waves of a massive alien conquest of Earth and is desperately searching for her brother. As the fifth and possibly final wave approaches, she meets a mysterious young man who might be able to help her.

Check out the trailer below and let us know what you think:

I have not read the book myself, but judging by the trailer, the movie deploys the standard tropes of a genre that has become increasingly formulaic over the past few years: courageous yet emotionally vulnerable young heroine, bleak post-apocalyptic setting and, of course, the requisite potential love triangle that somehow becomes the most important thing in the world to everyone involved. Still, the opening scenes of how the aliens actually decimate humanity show promise, and in addition to Moretz the cast includes the very capable likes of Liev Schreiber, Maria Bello and Ron Livingston.

I don't want to go all "get off my lawn" on this stuff, but the YA template can be a hard one to freshen up after a while. For every Twilight there's a Mortal Instruments; for every Hunger Games there's a Divergent. The 5th Wave looks like it borrows aspects of the latter two, as well as The Maze Runner and, the universe help us, The Host. What do you think?

The 5th Wave comes out in theaters Jan. 15, 2016.
