Rumor of the Day: Spider-Man's fighting an Avenger in Civil War

We've known for quite some time now, almost since Marvel nabbed the rights to use Spider-Man in its cinematic universe for the first time, that Peter Parker will appear in next year's Captain America: Civil War. We were speculating about it well before Marvel made it official and cast The Impossible star Tom Holland in the iconic role, and though we know it's definitely happening now, we still don't know exactly how.

Marvel Studios is on intriguing ground here. They're not telling a Spider-Man origin story in Civil War (or anywhere else, apparently), so it seems Peter Parker will just show up at some point in the film, at least a semi-established hero, and become embroiled in the bigger world that the Avengers have been living in for years now. Marvel has to take the time to make Spidey feel significant in the film, but they can't take too much time or they'll detract from the central conflict of the film, as well as the introduction of other vital MCU characters like Black Panther. It's interesting to think about, and while nothing official about Spidey's appearance has been released, a new report claims at least part of his screen time will be devoted to a showdown with an established Avenger.

Still here? OK, here we go.

According to Heroic HollywoodCivil War will feature a scene in which Spider-Man does battle with no less a force than Captain America. There aren't any other details at the moment, other than it's likely a "major showdown," but still, that's an exciting moment to ponder. Plus, it matches up at least a little with the Civil War comic, in which Peter Parker takes Iron Man's side and goes public with his superhero identity.

So it seems Marvel is definitely throwing Spider-Man into action right away.

Captain America: Civil War arrives May 6, 2016.
