Marvel gives old comic book a 21st century spin with Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur

Fans of Marvel’s Bronze Age may remember the 1978 title, Devil Dinosaur, about a dinosaur and his boy. Not a fan of Bronze comics? It’s okay. Modern Age fans will now have a chance to revisit the red dinosaur in a reboot—with a particular Modern Age twist.

Previously, Devil Dinosaur’s companion was Moon Boy, an evolved humanoid from a parallel universe where humans and dinosaurs co-existed. In 2015, Devil Dinosaur’s companion will be Moon Girl.

In addition, Moon Girl, known to the rest of the world as Lunella Lafayette, will be a fully human, African-American teenager.

According to EW, assistant editor Emily Shaw noted that Marvel’s comic books have been leaning toward an older crowd and that Marvel wanted a comic that younger readers could relate to ...

... as well as a comic a diversified audience can relate to. Artist Natalie Bustos said, “For decades now, we have seen more independent publishers taking a gamble on diversification, but always within the underground scene … A greater number of readers are looking for characters they can identify with,” writes EW.

But even if you don’t identify precisely with a teenaged African-American girl, Lunella is smart, adventurous and has her own dinosaur. You may just have to live with envying her.

Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur will be hitting the stands in November 2015.
