Star Trek star beams aboard Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song

River Song is returning to the Whoniverse in a series of radio plays in Doctor Who: The Diary of River Song. Launching in January 2016, the epic four-hour series will continue the timey-wimey adventures of the Doctor’s wife, once more portrayed by Alex Kingston. Already on board is Paul McGann's Eighth Doctor.

If you were already excited about this news, then you’ll be thrilled to hear that a fan-favorite Star Trek star is also beaming up for a role in the Big Finish audio drama.

The first adventure will feature Merlin actor Alexander Vlahos in the role of Bertie, who will join River at an archaeological dig in The Boundless Sea, penned by Jenny T Colgan. Script editor Matt Fitton said, "Jenny has been on my writing wish list for a while, and she’s created a funny, thrilling and scary adventure to kick-start River’s journey."

Next, River will head to the most exclusive shindig in the middle of Hyperspace in frequent Doctor Who novelist Justin Richards’ story I Went to a Marvellous Party. It’s there that she meets Gifford, played by Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Game of Thrones actor Alexander Siddig, and Isabella (Imogen Stubbs, Sense and Sensibility), a pair of jet-setters with links to the mysterious Rulers of the Universe.

River’s third adventure, Signs, will put her on the trail of some mysterious, planet-killing SporeShips. We’re then introduced to a handsome fellow time-traveling stranger who happens to be her future hubby (another one!), Mr. Song, played by Samuel West (Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell).

Last but not least, Eighth Doctor Paul McGann will finally show up in The Rulers of the Universe, penned by Matt Fitton. River will have to contend with a secret society and face off with an ancient alien force — with her beloved Time Lord husband-to-be caught in the middle.

Here are the official synopses for each episode:
