Star Wars: Episode VIII has reportedly found its villain

While most of our attention is on J.J. Abrams and his much-anticipated Star Wars: The Force Awakens, writer/director Rian Johnson (Looper) is already hard at work preparing to make the eighth, still officially untitled film in the main Star Wars story. We don't really know much about the film's plot, in part because it will depend at least a little on how The Force Awakens ends, and we also don't know what new characters or new worlds Johnson will be taking us to as he takes the reins of Star Wars. Apparently, though, we now know who he wants to be the franchise's next villain.

The Wrap reports that Oscar-winning actor Benicio Del Toro (Traffic, Guardians of the Galaxy) has been offered a villain role in Episode VIII, and that while talks are in the "very early stages," Disney and Lucasfilm really want to close this deal.

After making a name for himself through films like The Usual Suspects and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, and earning an Oscar for Traffic, Del Toro's tried his hand at some genre films in recent years, including The Wolfman and Marvel's massive summer hit Guardians of the Galaxy. He was also almost our new Khan in Star Trek Into Darkness, before backing out of that film. Now it seems he's heading across the street to Star Wars.

All we know about the role being offered to Del Toro at the moment is that it's villainous, and we also don't yet know if he'll take it (he did, after all, say no to Star Trek), so this could all vanish into thin air eventually. In the meantime, though, what do you think? Would you like to see Del Toro head to a galaxy far, far away?
