Meet the feudal, post-apocalyptic world of Into the Badlands in a 1st-look trailer

Journey to the West is a 16th century Chinese novel about a Buddhist who goes on a quest from China to India to fetch scrolls of Buddhist scripture—based, remarkably, on a true story that occurred in the 7th century. And now it’s about to get a 21st century version, Into the Badlands, courtesy of AMC…

…We think.

We have the first trailer, below. Although it looks like a fun martial arts adventure, we don’t see the connective tissue that grafts it to Journey of the West, a story of a monkey made of stone, a cursed pig-man, and demons.

Here, the world of Into the Badlands is a post-apocalyptic future, one where feudalism mixes easily with motorcycles. And it looks like fun. It just doesn’t look like Journey to the West. We're waiting expectantly for more.

This isn’t the first time Journey to the West has been adapted for a Western audience. The Japanese TV series Monkey! (1978-1980, translated into English by the BBC), the PlayStation 3 videogame Enslaved, and many, many adaptations have furthered the adventures of Tripitaka, Monkey, Pigsy, and Sandy.

Check out the trailer. And below that, we have a behind-the-scenes look at the martial artists who make the fight scenes look remarkable.
