Image Comics' space-set, sci-fi tale Roche Limit headed to the big screen

Sure, Image Comics might be best known for the massive hit The Walking Dead — but the indie publisher is also home to some awesome sci-fi projects. Turns out, one of them is headed to the big screen.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Michael Moreci's 2014 comic series Roche Limit has been picked up by media company Heavy Metal for film development. The series is set in a space colony that has devolved into a melting pot of criminal factions, and "follows a mystery centered on a missing girl while mixing in shades of horror." It’s apparently on the fast track, and the studio has already hired Seth Sherwood (Leatherface) to put a script together.

“It’s such a unique book and it needs that particular vision,” Moreci told The Hollywood Reporter. “To have people that really get it, I think it makes a difference.”

The comic itself has been a solid hit for Image, after initially launching as a five-issue run. Moreci is currently working on an ambitious five-issue follow up arc (set in a different time period, with a fresh art team no less), so if nothing else, there should be plenty of story for the film adaptation. Per the report, the studio is basing the script on the initial, five-issue arc.

The fact that indie comics can land film deals is a fascinating reflection of just how much the medium has evolved. Which, considering all of Marvel and DC’s stories are already wrapped up in rights deals, studios have to get creative when looking for comic-based IP to mine.

What do you think? Would you like to see Roche Limit on the big screen?
