Watch the first trailer from The Martian and meet the crew in a new promo video

The first trailer for The Martian has arrived, along with a video in which Matt Damon introduces the crew.

In this first three-minute look at Ridley Scott's sci-fi epic, astronaut Mark Watney (Damon) sets up the story and the stakes in a straightforward voiceover as a manned mission to Mars evacuates the surface of the planet but accidentally leaves Watney behind. Presumed dead, Watney nevertheless sets out to survive despite the fact that he has no way to contact NASA and his chances for being rescued are slim to none.

Based on Andy Weir's bestselling novel, The Martian comes after two other recent "reality-based" space adventures, Gravity and Interstellar, so it can't help but be compared to both. It's probably the most similar to Gravity in terms of being a more intimate survival tale without the larger implications for the human race that Interstellar touched on. While the trailer is exciting and Scott's eye for gorgeous compositions and perfect visual effects is on point, we've yet to see what The Martian can offer that is significantly different from those other films.

Meanwhile, a cool little clip has also popped up online that is set up as being filmed by Watney shortly before his ship, the Hermes, takes off for the Red Planet. He offers some info about the mission while taking his camera to meet the rest of his team, including pilot Rick Martinez (Michael Pena), commander Melissa Lewis (Jessica Chastain, finally getting into space after staying earthbound in Interstellar), ship surgeon Chris Beck (Sebastian Stan), German astronaut Alex Vogel (Aksel Hennie) and computer expert Beth Johanssen (Kate Mara).
