Marvel Comics' Axel Alonso reveals details on the All-New All-Different Marvel universe

As any comic fan has likely noticed, Marvel is knee-deep in a massive event aimed at reshaping the comic universe into something new. But what can we expect once Secret Wars actually comes to an end?

Marvel Comics Editor-in-Chief Axel Alonso chatted with Entertainment Weekly about the Secret Wars endgame, and specifically how the Marvel Universe will look once the dust settles. Alonso confirmed we’ll see a time jump between the end of Secret Wars and the launch of what is being billed as the All-New All-Different Marvel universe.

Not surprisingly, that relaunch will bring a fresh round of No. 1 issues to serve as a jumping-on point for new and old fans, though Alonso promised it won’t mean all the continuity in the books you’re currently reading will be thrown out with the bathwater. The answer lies somewhere in the middle, and Alonso hopes fans will stick around to figure it all out. He teased that Secret Wars will have “universe-wide ramifications” for many characters, which could mean anything from a new sidekick to a wholly different character taking up a mantle.

Getting into the nitty-gritty, Alonso also revealed some new characters we’ll meet once it is all over (a new Hulk, Wolverine and Spider-Man), which will almost certainly be the result of fusing together the main Marvel Universe and the Ultimate Universe that is being wrapped up as part of the ongoing Ultimate End arc. We’d definitely look for Miles Morales to stick around, and Spider-Gwen also makes a cameo in the new key art above. Basically, this seems to be a way to mash up the best parts of the multiverse, which isn't a bad idea by any means.

Here’s an excerpt from Alonso’s comments:

"I think it’s a good time to be a long-time fan because we have top creators who are going to be telling inspired stories of everyone from Spider-Man to The Avengers to the Hulk. We’ve had a lot of time to plan for this, so as I said, there’s going to be a lot of new developments. I’ll go ahead and tell you the Marvel Universe is about to see the arrival of an All-New Hulk—not a Hulk that you’ve seen before. And this development is deeply rooted in story. I am personally excited about it and its ramifications and it’s a fascinating story that I think Bruce Banner fans will definitely want to read. You’ll also see the arrival of a new Spider-Man in the Marvel Universe and you’ll also see—spoiler alert—a Wolverine emerge on the scene. I’m not going to say who, but a Wolverine that is certain to provoke reactions.

And we’re very excited about it. We’ve been talking about it for some time, and we have really great stories to tell with all of these. And again, that’s just the tip of the iceberg. There’s other stuff coming up: the long-overdue arrival of beloved characters in new ongoing series by incredible creative teams, new teams will arrive in the Marvel Universe that will have really cool mandates and mission statements and be composed of some alarming characters. So we have some great stuff ahead."

Marvel plans to reveal a whole lot more about the All-New All-Different universe on July 1, when the company’s free, 64-page All-New All-Different Marvel Previews magazine hits comic shelves. That should include info on new books, new art and details on the creative teams moving forward.

Until then, enjoy the insanity of Secret Wars and let us know what you want to see next.
